3 Tamiya Products That Changed Plastic Modelling

26-03-2026

Some modelling tools have become such a natural part of the workbench that we barely notice how much they changed the way we build models. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement, masking tape and panel liner are exactly that kind of product.

Some modelling products make a big impression the first time you use them. Others become part of your routine so naturally that, after a few months, you can barely remember how you managed without them.

That second category includes three Tamiya classics: Extra Thin Cement, masking tape in a dispenser and Panel Line Accent Color. These are not “gadgets”. They are tools that genuinely changed the way plastic models are built and painted.

Tamiya was not always first, and it did not invent everything from scratch. But in several important cases, it did something very significant: it took workshop methods already known to modellers and competing brands, then turned them into convenient, refined and widely adopted standards. That is exactly why so many modellers value these products — even if they no longer think about it day to day.

1. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement – the glue that brought order to the workbench

The biggest change was not that this glue “sticks better” than others. The real breakthrough was how it is used.

For years, the standard choice was traditional, thicker model glue. It still has its place — especially for larger parts, where a bit more adhesive and a slightly longer working time can be useful. But for precise assembly of smaller parts, application could simply be awkward. You had to apply the glue before joining the parts, it was easy to use too much, and even easier to mark or stain the surface of the model.

That is why modellers had been looking for a better method for a long time. Before today’s ready-made solutions appeared, many would dry-fit the parts first and then let a thin solvent flow into the joint by capillary action — using things like lacquer thinner, acetone, trichloroethylene or similar chemicals. It worked, but it was not especially comfortable and carried some obvious risks.

Later, more civilised solutions began to appear. Systems like this were offered by companies such as Deluxe Materials, while other hobby chemistry brands also developed capillary glues and applicators. There were even setups using a needle and a glass tube. Clever in principle, but not always easy to use well. You dipped the applicator into a tall bottle, sealed it with your finger, moved it over the model, then released it so the liquid could flow where it was needed. It was a smart idea, but in practice it could be awkward and did not always deliver the precision modellers wanted.

That is where Tamiya made a real impact. It did not invent capillary action itself — it packaged it perfectly for modellers. A low, square bottle that is hard to knock over. A short, stiff brush built into the cap. Easy, controlled application. The ability to hold two parts together first and only then run the glue into the joint. That was the moment when model assembly stopped feeling like a fight with the tool and started feeling genuinely easy.

This is the product that pushed many modellers toward a faster and cleaner way of assembling kits. Used in small amounts, Extra Thin can even be applied to some already-painted small parts without seriously damaging the paint. Of course, it still needs to be used with care, but in practice it is one of those tools that genuinely speeds up the build.

Over time, Tamiya also introduced a version with a milder citrus-like smell, which made day-to-day use even more pleasant.

Many modellers also know a simple workshop trick: once the bottle is empty, it can be refilled with Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner, which is sold in a larger bottle. It is a very similar substance, with a slightly different formula, but in practice it works well as a refill for continued model assembly.

Simplest way to use it: first align and hold the parts together, then touch the brush to the seam. The glue will flow into the joint on its own.

What to watch out for: do not place your finger directly on the seam or the gluing area. If you hold the part too close, the glue can wick under your finger as well — and leave a mark or damage the surface of the model.

2. Tamiya Masking Tape – a small product that made a big difference

Today it is hard to imagine scale modelling without good masking tape. But it was not always so straightforward.

Modellers used whatever worked: liquid mask, various household masking tapes, technical tapes, and more advanced builders even reached for Bare-Metal®Foil. Good results were possible, but usually at the cost of extra effort, trial and error, and the simple fact that not every solution worked well for clean, sharp masking lines.

Tamiya was not the only company to notice the problem, but it was one of the brands that solved it most cleanly and most effectively. It introduced a tape that was thin, predictable and easy to use — but just as importantly, it introduced the dispenser.

That may sound like a small thing, but the dispenser turned out to be one of the most important parts of the whole system. It protects the tape edges from dust and contamination, which matters a lot for masking quality. It also makes storage easier, helps you find the end quickly, and simply makes the product pleasant to use again and again.

The tape itself is made from thin Japanese self-adhesive paper, commonly referred to by modellers simply as “kabuki”. It is strong enough to handle well, but still soft and slightly flexible. That means it conforms nicely to the model, gives clean edges, and can even be gently worked around more challenging surfaces.

Over time, Tamiya expanded the range with additional widths, wider tapes for larger areas, versions with attached clear film for masking broad surfaces, and masking sheets for cutting your own custom masks. And again — it was not alone for long. Other brands followed the same path. Today, similar solutions are available from many manufacturers, and thinner strips of similar paper tape can also be found, for example, in the Hobby 2000 range.

But it was Tamiya that turned this into a product that became the default choice for a huge number of modellers.

Simplest way to use it: before painting, press down the tape edge firmly with a cotton bud, toothpick or even your fingernail, especially around panel lines and rivets.

What to watch out for: before masking, it is worth degreasing the surface and working over a properly cured primer coat. That greatly reduces the risk of lifting paint when the mask comes off. It is also best to roll the tape back slowly rather than tearing it off sharply — that helps reduce the chance of peeling the paint.

3. Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color – a ready-made wash that simply works

The third product that made a real impact on everyday modelling is Panel Line Accent Color. It is a simple product — and that is exactly why it works so well.

In practice, it is simply a ready-made enamel wash, pre-thinned and supplied in a convenient bottle with a built-in brush. Its job is straightforward: to highlight panel lines, recesses and surface detail so the model gains more depth and visual definition.

Of course, Tamiya did not invent the idea of a wash. Modellers had been mixing their own for years, using oil paints, enamels, thinners, white spirit or mineral spirits. Later, specialist hobby chemistry brands such as AK Interactive, AMMO by Mig and others also developed their own dedicated products.

But once again, Tamiya did something very practical. It gave modellers a ready-to-use product in the right colours, already thinned properly and packed in a format that is simply convenient. A stable bottle, easy application, a brush in the cap, and a small range of useful shades that cover most common needs in practice.

The biggest advantage of Panel Line Accent Color is control. Once applied, it is very easy to correct if needed. If it spreads too far or settles where it should not, a brush or cotton bud dampened with white spirit or mineral spirits is usually enough to tidy it up. That means even a less experienced modeller can get a very good result without stress and without having to mix their own chemistry.

That is exactly why this product became part of so many workbenches. Not because it is the only one of its kind, but because it is simply well thought out.

Simplest way to use it: it works best over a gloss or satin clear coat. That helps it flow more cleanly, makes the spread easier to control, and makes cleanup much easier as well.

What to watch out for: do not flood large areas all at once. It is better to work in smaller stages and build the effect gradually than to fight with too much wash across the whole model later.

Why do modellers love these products, even if they rarely say it out loud?

Because they do not try to impress. They simply solve problems.

Extra Thin Cement made assembly faster and cleaner.
Tamiya Masking Tape gave modellers a convenient and predictable masking standard.
Panel Line Accent Color simplified one of the most satisfying stages of finishing a model.

These are not the kinds of products that usually end up on the front page of a catalogue or in heated debates about “revolutionary modelling tools”. But they are exactly the kind of products that make everyday work at the bench less frustrating, more predictable and simply more enjoyable.

And maybe that is why so many modellers forget to say “thank you” to Tamiya. These products have become such a natural part of everyday modelling that they almost feel like they were always there. But they were not. Someone had to think them through — and put them into modellers’ hands in exactly the right form.
