Mustang with bazookas under Chinese skies - new kit promotion!

The next release of the Model of the Year 2022, Arma Hobby's 1/72 scale Mustang is a P-51B Mustang China/Burma/India armed with a novelty: rocket launchers (‘’bazookas‘’) under each wing! The kit includes an all-new sprue with triple M10 launchers firing 4.5 inch M8 rockets (commonly known as ‘’bazookas‘’ - by similarity to the famous US infantry anti-tank weapon).

In the fight against the Japanese on the China and Burma fronts, US Mustang squadrons, continuing the tradition of the ‘Flying Tigers’, rarely had the luxury of performing purely fighter tasks. On a daily basis, airmen were forced to fly a variety of sorties, including reconnaissance and ground attack. Successful missions required a variety of armaments, depending on the targets, hence a wide range of bombs large and quite small, as well as rocket missiles were used.

‘Bazookas’ - triple rocket launchers

Under the skies of China and Burma, P-51B Mustang fighters often flew with underwing bundles of three tubes under each wing. The M10 launchers (as well as the M14 and M16, differing only in the material from which they were made) fired M8 missiles of 4.5 inch calibre. The effectiveness of hitting a nearly 40 lbs projectile was comparable to that of a 105 mm cannon. Although the M10/M8 ‘bazookas’ were superseded fairly quickly by the simpler and heavier HVAR missiles, in China and Burma they were for a time an important armament of many fighter squadrons equipped with Mustangs and P-40s. Interestingly for the modeller, it was often the case that different types of ordnance were used at the same time, such as bombs and rockets or rockets and fuel tanks.
