P-400 Airacobra 1/48 – an exotic fighter for your collection
In 1942, when young USAAF pilots first faced Japanese aircraft over New Guinea and Guadalcanal, many of them sat in the cockpit of a rather unusual machine – the P-400 Airacobra.
It was a fighter that was meant to be British. Delivered to the RAF as the Airacobra I, it was soon handed back to the Americans. Still wearing British camouflage and serials, its combat career took a very different path – not over the Channel, but across the jungles, muddy airstrips, and skies of the Pacific.
With its mid-mounted engine, nose-mounted armament, and tricycle landing gear, the Airacobra was unlike anything pilots had flown before. And yet, in the harsh conditions of the South Pacific, it proved effective – thriving in low-altitude combat during the desperate early battles against Japan.
