Hurricane Mk I Trop 1/48 (40016) – the tropical take on a familiar Hurricane
Our 1/48 Hurricane Mk I is a kit many modellers already know well. It goes together smoothly and predictably, so you can focus on what really matters: painting and finishing. On top of that, the surface and cockpit detail reads very well under paint and weathering, making the whole build feel rewarding from start to finish.
The Hurricane Mk I Trop (40016) brings the same solid building experience into a different operational setting – outside Europe, where the RAF was still figuring out how to adapt aircraft and camouflage to hot, dusty conditions.
What made the Mk I Trop different?
Tropical Hurricanes stood out thanks to features introduced for harsh climates. The easiest way to spot them is:
- the Vokes tropical filter under the engine
- additional ventilation slots on the sides of the fuselage
These are small but very distinctive details – they immediately change the look of the aircraft and give it that rugged, “out on the line” character.
Three distinct schemes – from the period when tropical camouflage was taking shape
This kit includes three clearly different marking and camouflage options. They come from a period when tropical RAF camouflage was still evolving, and real-world unit practice often ran ahead of official guidance. Each option has its own character and colour balance, so you can build three Hurricanes that genuinely feel like they come from different stories.
Where and when?
- Malta (1942) – Mediterranean operations and aircraft worked hard in demanding conditions
- North Africa (1941–1942) – classic desert operations and the ongoing evolution of “desert” schemes
- Kenya / Abyssinian front (1941) – a less obvious, but genuinely fascinating chapter in Hurricane service
For full details of each scheme, please see the product page: Hurricane Mk I Trop 1/48 (40016).
