Hobby 2000 72089 Junkers Ju 88 S-3 1/72

The Junkers Ju 88 S-3 was one of the later high-speed bomber variants of the Ju 88 family. The S-series was developed with an emphasis on speed – defensive armament and aerodynamic drag were reduced, making performance the aircraft’s primary defence against Allied fighters.

The Ju 88 S-3 appeared at a time when the Luftwaffe was increasingly forced to operate at night and under conditions of overwhelming Allied air superiority. Aircraft of this type were used by KG 66, a unit specialising in night and navigation-related operations over Western Europe.

Marking options included

  • Ju 88 S-3 Z6+BH, 1./KG 66, Celle, Germany, 24 January 1945.
  • Ju 88 S-3, WNr. 330273, Z6+HL, 3./KG 66, Le Culot, Belgium, autumn 1944.
  • Ju 88 S-3 Z6+CL, 3./KG 66, Dedelstorf, Germany, 19/20 September 1944.
  • Ju 88 S-3, WNr. 330897, L1+AP, Chièvres, Belgium, August 1944.

The main attraction of this release is the selection of four highly unusual camouflage schemes. From dark finishes intended for night operations to dense, irregular patterns applied over lighter base colours, each option gives the finished model a distinctly different appearance.

The Z6+BH is particularly striking with its dense, meandering camouflage pattern. This is an excellent choice for modellers looking for a Ju 88 that stands apart from aircraft finished in more conventional Luftwaffe camouflage schemes.

New Hobby 2000 Releases – Harrier, Skyhawk and the Fast Ju 88s

Some deliveries are built around one obvious headline release. This one is different. The four new Hobby 2000 kits form a much more interesting story, stretching from specialised Ju 88 variants of the final years of World War II to the Harrier and Skyhawk – aircraft that defined strike aviation in very different ways during the decades that followed. There is also something that connects all...
