A-4N Skyhawk in the Yom Kippur War (1973)

During the Yom Kippur War, the Israeli Air Force faced a massive assault from Egypt and Syria. The A-4N “Ayit” formed the backbone of Israel’s ground attack fleet, tasked with striking enemy armor, artillery, and fortified positions. Despite being considered an older design, the Skyhawk proved to be highly effective and resilient in combat. The type suffered heavy losses, mainly due to advanced Soviet-made surface-to-air missiles, yet it played a crucial role in halting the enemy offensive and enabling the Israeli counterattack.

A-4N Skyhawk in Operation “Peace for Galilee” (1982)

In 1982, Israel launched Operation “Peace for Galilee” in Lebanon. Once again, the A-4N Skyhawk was at the forefront, carrying out close air support missions against Syrian forces and PLO positions. Although more modern aircraft such as the F-15 and F-16 were already in service, the Ayit carried out a large share of the combat sorties thanks to its simplicity, reliability, and availability in large numbers. This operation marked the last major conflict in which the A-4N was employed on such a scale by the Israeli Air Force.
