1/72 SCALE GRUMMAN® F-14D TOMCAT™

Plastic model kit of the iconic U.S. Navy fighter, new tooling 2026

An icon of U.S. Navy carrier aviation

From the 1970s until its retirement in 2006, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was one of the most recognizable and feared carrier fighters. It was designed first and foremost as a “shield” for carrier battle groups: a powerful onboard radar and long-range weapons made it a dedicated fleet air-defense interceptor, capable of engaging threats before they could close with the ships.

From interceptor to multi-role strike fighter

In the 1990s the Tomcat’s role began to evolve. Thanks to its large payload and range, the F-14 was increasingly tasked with strike missions. By the end of the decade, Tomcats gained the ability to deliver precision attacks at long range: the LANTIRN pod and laser-guided bombs enabled “surgical” strikes that had previously been associated mainly with purpose-built strike platforms.

F-14D – the most advanced “Cat”

The F-14D was the pinnacle of the type’s development. It received F110-GE-400 engines (as used on the F-14B), plus a new digital radar system and avionics with significantly faster data processing. Improved situational awareness and tracking capability turned the F-14D into a true multi-role platform—effective not only in fleet air defense, but also in strike tasks and reconnaissance missions.

Operational history: from 1992 to the end of the Tomcat era

F-14Ds were delivered to frontline units from 1992, remaining a key element of U.S. Navy carrier aviation for years. In the final period of service, Tomcats took part in combat operations including Afghanistan and Iraq, where they flew both escort and precision strike missions using guided weapons. Until the very end they were a true fleet workhorse: the combination of range, payload, and upgraded avionics made the F-14D highly effective in modern expeditionary operations. In 2006 the Tomcat was finally retired, closing one of the most iconic chapters in late-20th and early-21st century carrier aviation.
